FSIS Issues Public Health Alert For Frozen Mushroom Risotto Products Due To Misbranding And Undeclared Allergen

Editor’s Note: April 5, 2024 – Details of this public health alert were updated to reflect additional misbranded products that were produced and distributed. The distribution area was also expanded to include retail locations in Michigan. WASHINGTON, Jan. 5, 2024 – The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is issuing a public health alert for frozen mushroom risotto products due to misbranding and an undeclared allergen. The product labeled as porcini mushroom risotto bites may actually contain hot dogs in puff pastry, which contain sesame, a known allergen, that is not declared on the product label. FSIS is issuing this public health alert to ensure that consumers with an allergy to sesame are aware that these products should not be consumed. A recall was not requested because the product is no longer available for purchase. The frozen Porcini Mushroom Risotto Bites packages, which may actually contain hot dogs in puff pastry, were produced April 11, 2023, and Dec. 27, 2023. The following products are subject to the public health alert [ view labels ]: 7.5-oz. cardboard packages labeled as “Wild Fork Porcini Mushroom Risotto Bites” with lot code 101231, “BEST BY DATE: 10/11/2024”, and EST. 39896 on the side of the box. 7.5-oz. cardboard packages labeled as “Wild Fork Porcini Mushroom Risotto Bites” with lot code 361231, “BEST BY DATE: 6/27/2025,” and EST. 32068 on the side of the box. The products bear establishment number “EST. 39896” or “EST. 32068” on the side of the box. There is no USDA mark of inspection. These items were shipped to retail locations in California, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Wisconsin. The problem was discovered after the firm notified the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that it had received a consumer complaint reporting that the hot dogs in puff pastry product had been found in a package labeled as mushroom risotto bites. FDA then notified FSIS about the issue. Additional products were discovered that fall within the scope of this public health alert after the establishment received one customer complaint and notified FSIS. There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about an illness should contact a healthcare provider. FSIS is concerned that some product may be in consumers’ freezers. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.
